We offer a number of different pieces of jewelry containing pearls but only some contain the black pearls. The main pieces are probably ear rings that have just 1 pearl for each ear ring. Tahiti is a big supplier of black pearls due to an incident in 1963 which saw an experimental farm set up in hikueru atoll which is on the tuamotu islands just east of Tahiti.
Although they were discovered then it was not until the late 1980’s that the boom really took off. There are now hundreds of pearl farms that operate on 26 atolls boasting thousands of people now employed.
There were devastating hurricanes in 1983 which made hundreds of people abandon their ancestral islands. The farms have now encouraged a lot of these people to return. It has stopped a lot of the natural stocks being used.
There are fertilizers and sewerage that can make some of the lagoons unsuitable for pearl farming which is why they mainly used lightly populated atolls so there are no other forms of agriculture used.
The only draw back is that the farmers feed themselves on the local fish which does have an affect on the local marine life that these lagoons offer. Pearl quality is actually determined on the colours and also by the health of the lagoon. The colour of the shell which is the host shell for the pearl can influence the colour and luster of the pearl it produces. We do have a tahitian necklace that offers coloured pearls but there are other quality pieces that do contain the black pearls if it is them you are after.
